A Modern Herbaceous and Grasses Garden

Old Windsor, Berkshire

Design and project management for an ‘Herbaceous and Grasses Garden’ (350m2), to replace the existing traditional herbaceous border designed by the late Rosemary Verey. The concept for the new design was based on the rhythm of the owner walking through his garden. Large drifts of grasses and herbaceous perennials sweep close to the paths and recede away like a tide. Groups of mainly evergreen shrubs have been planted to create a strong year round backbone and to act as a foil to the more ephemeral herbaceous and grasses. The use of herbaceous perennials and grasses for this design was inspired by the work of the Dutch plantsman Piet Odulf.
